Share some of the strategies that I tried to keep in our lives after our trip.
Hi friends! How are you doing? How was the weekend? I hope you had an excellent one! We celebrated my girl’s BDAY, the pilot was at home after a trip, I taught a bar lesson and met a friend for brunch. We also had monsoon rains, which is always a little treat.
For today’s post, I wanted to discuss a bit of our trip, my point of view since our return and some of the strategies that I tried to maintain. As you know, we like to travel. I have the impression that this is the most combined way for us to spend the money we have made – in experiences – and that gives us a chance to be far from the bustle and to enjoy the family (or in couple). The journey always gives me a perspective and helps me to remind me of what really feeds my energy and my joy … and what does not.
While we were in Spain, we were able to take our time and really appreciate every day. I really tried to keep some of the things that I loved so much about our trip (you know, in addition to epic sites, culture and food …) and put them in a small list. It is not really a “vacation mode” forever, but rather what the trip reminded me the most.
Strategies I want to keep after our trip
1. Walk as much as possible
We have traveled kilometers daily, without even trying, and the movement was natural and refreshing – not forced. Although it’s a little more difficult here, I always try to recreate a little at home with walks after dinner, walk during meetings and walk Maisey when the rain has cooled things a little.
It’s funny because Tucson is not a city suitable for walking. Everything is far away, it’s a million degrees, and if you are outside the walking, most people will assume that your car has broken down, unless you are in a neighborhood or a hiking trail. This is definitely the summit of summer, so I used my small steak throughout the day. In Spain, I would have easily reached 20,000 steps a day, and I must be intentional to reach 10K here.
2. Cook from zero (and choose places that do the same)
The food we ate felt nourishing and intentional, that it was made to the airbnb, by friends (our friend Tony makes an epic carrillada) or by a chef in a comfortable local place. Although I don’t think we need to have fantasy meals all the time, the quality and freshness of the ingredients say a lot. I have found that since we have been at home, there is only one handful of restaurants here which seem to me to be worth the cost. I prefer to buy good ingredients and cook at home, instead of paying 100-200 for a poor meal for the four of us.
3. Keep meals simple
I also remembered that meals did not need 18 ingredients or 3 sauces to be satisfactory. A piece of grilled fish, roasted vegetables, a drizzle of olive oil and lemon: perfection. Since our trip was longer, I was able to cook in the airbnb but I also didn’t want to buy a ton of ingredients and components. Our meals were so simple, fresh and satisfactory.
4. Stay late and sleep (seasonally)
It was really magical to kiss the summer nights: late children and spontaneous gelato races, the morning light take a look through the windows while you are still wrapped in the bed. It is not a routine forever, but a fun reminder of folding the rules sometimes. The school year is very rigid and scheduled (it must be), so it was like an epic treat to stand up until midnight or 1 a.m. most nights and start the day around 9:30 am.
5. Slow meal with good company
Recreate 2 -hour meals, whether dinner on the terrace with friends, or just the four of us at the dining room. I loved that meals are not precipitated, which allows you to enjoy the food and the company much more. I find that you are more attentive with hunger signals, so you eat less. I tried to slow down a little with all aspects of life.
6. Prioritize new adventures with girls
Even at home: new parks, new recipes, small day excursions or just let them help me plan something “new”. Travel always reminds me of how magical it is to see the world through their eyes. In addition, what they say is true: they grow so quickly. The things they appreciated are no longer as exciting, so it was fun to explore what they are and have new adventures together.
7. If you take a break … Nothing is falling back
This one is tall. Together, we all carry a huge mental and emotional load, especially as mothers. We are those who remember who mysteriously failed in socks, the ingredients we have to take for dinner, order a gift for birthday party this weekend, a child has a dentist meeting tomorrow, as well as working times and tasks. It was refreshing to take a step back … and nothing broke. The blog, the reception box, the tasks; They were all waiting for our return, and it was ok.
When the two girls were babies, I was still blog three times a day and I couldn’t imagine taking off for more than a short weekend. I ended up taking about six weeks off, for the very first time, and nothing broke.
I pre-written my content in advance and I only made the calls and customer emails during our absence. It was a huge gift, and it gave me a new inpiration and energy to come back in things the second we were back. Although I don’t think I will resume six weeks of leave as soon as lol is a good reminder that you can move away a little and that everything will be fine.
8. Take time for art, music and culture
Whether it is a museum, live music or listening to a symphony on Spotify during dinner, it adds wealth to daily life. You don’t need to be in another country to bring beauty in your day. I try to make an effort to reserve theater tickets, enjoy the outdoor music, visit the museum and bring small pieces of culture and joy in our lives.

One of the most beautiful things about Spain is the community environment. Our friends go to an international school in Seville and parents meet frequently. They constantly appreciate a drink or tapas together while the children trigger and plan meals, day trips and game dates. We are lucky to have an incredible community here in Tucson, so it was a good reminder to continue to maintain the relationships that are important for us.
10. Dress for the day
Europeans have a way to present themselves for the day with care. While leggings have their place (I will never leave them entirely lol), dressing is good. I really feel more concentrated and productive when I am in * clothes instead of sweating and a hooded sweatshirt. 😉
