For today’s post, I wanted to talk about something I’ve been thinking about lately: what I would do differently if I started my health journey today.

What I would do differently if I started my health journey today

I’ve experienced a few major transition points with my health over the years:

– In college, when I first decided I wanted to “be healthy.” I tried everything: different eating styles, workouts, routines. Some worked…some didn’t.

– A few years after I got married, when I stopped taking birth control and realized how it was masking symptoms and quietly wearing me out. I needed daily naps and lived on multiple cups of coffee just to function.

– During my fertility struggles, when I made big changes in exercise and nutrition and discovered functional medicine (which was considered a sleight of hand in 2009, let me tell you).

– Postpartum, facing intense situations postpartum depression and anxiety.

– Later, when eye problems and autoimmune symptoms began to appear.

And now… here I am.

Am I perfect? Absolutely not 😉

But I feel better now than I did in college…and it definitely didn’t happen overnight. It took time, mistakes, certificatesexperience and a lot of learning about nuances and customization.

If I had to start again today, here’s what I would do first:

I would stop undereating

I undereat for years and couldn’t understand why my hair was falling out, my energy was non-existent and my body felt stuck. I wasn’t eating enough protein, fiber, or calories in general, and my body was constantly trying to survive instead of thriving.

I would regulate my nervous system before following the protocols

I was in fight or flight from about the age of six until…honestly, only a few years ago. I didn’t realize how much my nervous system affects everything: hormones, digestion, immunity, sleep. It took therapy, supplements, habits and a lot of awareness to get out of this state. I still remind myself several times a day: “This is not an emergency. » Most of us vastly underestimate how much our nervous system determines our health.

I will test sooner

If you don’t test, you’re guessing…. and guessing is expensive. I wasted money on powders and supplements that I didn’t need because I didn’t have the data. Testing allows you to personalize your plan instead of following the trends or the loudest online.

I would tinker less and ask for help sooner

I tinkered with my fitness and nutrition for a long time, especially in the beginning. Looking back, I didn’t need to reinvent the wheel. Learning from an experienced practitioner would have saved me years of trial and error.
