This simple homemade apple pie filling will warm your body and heart.

Simple Homemade Apple Pie Filling

I’ve seen jars of apple pie filling sold at specialty stores and always thought it was a great idea. You can use it with ice cream, on pancakes or on its own as a treat.

The best part about apple pie filling is that you skip the crust (which is sad for many). Why is it great? Pie crust is made with a ton of butter (or lard) and flour and adds a lot of calories to the pie. I never figured out how to make a low calorie crust.

This way, you can enjoy apple pie without going over your calorie budget.

Other ideas I’ve had include my healthy apple crisp and my apple chips recipe.

I made it in a slow cooker because I like the convenience of being able to walk away for hours without thinking about what I’m cooking. I used a slow cooker liner to make cleanup easier, so this whole project was a breeze.

The house smelled so good when we were cooking. I’m amazed at how home baking apples smell. Maybe it’s because I live in New England.

If you live in Santa Fe, does the scent of roasted chili peppers smell like home? I would like to know what cooking smells make people calmer and more comfortable.

All you have to do is peel, core and dice the apples – add the filling – and cook for a few hours. It’s really simple and makes it easy to reduce sugar intake. I cut the sugar in half from another recipe I found and found it to be very sweet.

There are only 8 grams of added sugar in one serving (about 1 ½ teaspoons). Most of the sugar comes from apples.

I store it in the refrigerator in a tightly sealed container and warm it up a bit when I’m craving dessert.

What would you make with this apple pie filling?
